How Furball Led To Whitey

Whitey is Furball's daughter. Furball had been a stray that came to inhabit our front porch for the best part of year until one spring he disappeared. One night sometime after we had noticed his absence, I saw him with a group of 5-7 others dog trotting down the sidewalk of the closest larger street in our neighborhood. The next time I saw him, he was the only dog with the dog that all the others had been actually pursuing that night.

I followed them to the back yard of a retired gentleman who lived about a block on the other side of this larger street from our house. He had an old shed that the other dog went under immediately while Furball took up a "guard" position adjacent to it. When I looked under neath the shed, sure enough there were several puppies happy to see that mom had returned.

The next time I went by to check on them, the owner of the house was outside and we talked about the dogs and how they seemed to have made a real "family" so to speak. I came by a couple more times to let my son see where Furball had gone and to bring by the dog food we still had so it could be used for them all.

When I came by once again after several days, they were all gone and the fellow there said that the city had picked them up after someone had called in a complaint. We went to the "pound" immediately and found the mother with all her puppies together in one pen. However, they had already put Furball to sleep.

We decided to adopt one of the puppies that we later named Whitey, and ended up leaving with another from the puppy adoption area that came to be Chewy. It was very sad for us to have this happen to Furball although it was probably inevitable as long as no one (including ourselves) decided to take real responsibility for him. However, it was a good feeling to make the connection with a dog we figured was related to him.
